Indians can visit Kazakhstan visa-free for 14 days. Here's a 5-day Almaty plan with Shymbulak, Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes, plus flights and best time.
Kazakhstan has quickly become one of the most exciting short foreign trips for Indian travellers. There's no visa to apply for, Almaty is only a few hours from Delhi and Mumbai, and you get snow peaks, turquoise lakes and a huge red canyon in a single week. Here's a simple 5-day Almaty itinerary, with the visa rules, flights, best time to go and practical tips.
Kazakhstan visa rules for Indians
- Visa-free stay: Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 14 days per visit, with a maximum of 42 days in any 180 days.
- No extensions: leave before your 14 days are up. If you plan a longer stay, you need the right visa before you travel.
- Passport: carry a passport with at least 6 months' validity from your arrival date.
- Purpose: visa-free entry is for visits such as tourism. It doesn't allow paid work.
- Registration: visitors may need to be registered with the migration authorities soon after arrival. Hotels usually handle this, but ask at check-in.
Direct flights to Almaty from India
- From Delhi: Air Astana and IndiGo have flown nonstop to Almaty. The flight takes about 3.5 hours.
- From Mumbai: Air Astana has run a nonstop service a few times a week. The flight takes about 4.5 hours.
- Other cities: connect through Delhi or Mumbai, or fly with one stop through a Gulf hub.
Airline schedules change by season, so confirm the current days and timings before you fix your dates. With limited weekly flights from Mumbai, your flight days may decide how many nights you can spend in Almaty.
Best time to visit Almaty
- April to June: fresh green mountains, spring flowers and comfortable city days. Nights can still be cool.
- July to August: the warmest months, and a good time for lakes and mountain walks. Expect more visitors.
- September to October: golden autumn colours and clear days. One of the nicest times to go.
- December to March: snow season for skiing at Shymbulak and skating at Medeu. It gets very cold, and some roads to the lakes can be difficult.
5-day Almaty itinerary
- 1
Day 1 — Arrive and explore the city
Check in and keep the day easy. Walk through Panfilov Park to see the colourful wooden Zenkov Cathedral, then stroll along Arbat, Almaty's pedestrian street, and try a local cafe for dinner.
- 2
Day 2 — Medeu, Shymbulak and Kok Tobe
Head into the mountains to the Medeu ice rink, then take the cable car up to Shymbulak for big views and snow, even on many spring days. In the evening, ride the cable car up Kok Tobe hill to watch the city lights come on.
- 3
Day 3 — Charyn Canyon, overnight near Saty
Leave early for Charyn Canyon, about 200 km and 3 hours from Almaty. Walk through the Valley of Castles, with its towering red rock formations, then continue to a simple guesthouse in Saty village.
- 4
Day 4 — Kaindy and Kolsai Lakes
See Kaindy Lake, famous for the sunken spruce trees rising out of its water, then the deep blue Kolsai Lake. The last stretch to Kaindy is often by off-road vehicle. Drive back to Almaty in the evening; it's about 4 to 5 hours.
- 5
Day 5 — Green Bazaar and fly home
Visit the Green Bazaar for dried fruit, nuts, cheese and spices, and pick up souvenirs. Then transfer to the airport. If your flight leaves late, add a museum or a relaxed last meal in the city.
Planning around closures and access
- Big Almaty Lake: road access has been closed or restricted in recent years. The lake is a drinking-water reservoir, so swimming and boating aren't allowed. Check the current position before you count on visiting.
- Shymbulak and Kok Tobe: private cars have been restricted, so plan on using the cable cars or official shuttles.
- Mountain weather: snow and rain can close roads and cable cars at short notice, so keep a spare half-day if you can.
Money, food and phones
- Currency: Kazakhstan uses the tenge (KZT). Cards work at hotels, malls and larger restaurants in Almaty, but carry cash for taxis, bazaars and village stops.
- Food: local dishes are heavy on meat and dairy. Almaty has Indian restaurants and vegetarian-friendly cafes, but options thin out quickly outside the city, so carry snacks and tell your guesthouse about your food needs in advance.
- Internet: buy an eSIM before you fly, or a local SIM with your passport on arrival. Coverage is patchy in the mountains, so download offline maps first.
- Clothing: carry layers in every season, as the mountains are much colder than the city. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the canyon and the lakes.
- Language: Kazakh and Russian are the main languages. Keep a translation app handy, as English is less common outside hotels and tourist spots.
