From Maldives water villas and Bali's rice terraces to Kashmir's houseboats and the Andamans' beaches — how to pick the right honeymoon for your month, budget and style.
Your honeymoon is the one trip where everything should feel easy. The right destination depends on three things: the month you travel, how many nights you have, and whether you want to relax on a beach, explore a new country or wrap up in the mountains. Here are our favourite picks, in India and abroad.
Abroad
- 1
Maldives — the classic beach escape
Private island resorts, water villas and some of the clearest water in the world. Four to five nights is ideal; meal plans and seaplane or speedboat transfers make a big difference to the cost, so compare them carefully.
- 2
Bali — culture, cafés and beaches
Ubud's rice terraces and temples, cliff-top sunsets at Uluwatu and beach time in Seminyak or Nusa Dua. Six to seven nights lets you split the stay between the hills and the coast.
- 3
Thailand — great value and variety
Phuket and Krabi for islands and beaches, with an optional city stop in Bangkok. Short flights from Mumbai and a wide range of hotels keep it easy on the budget.
- 4
Mauritius — relaxed and romantic
Beach resorts, catamaran trips and lush scenery, with a calm, unhurried feel. Six nights suits most couples.
- 5
Switzerland and Europe — for the dream trip
Snow peaks, lakes and scenic train rides. Plan well ahead for the Schengen visa, and allow at least seven to eight nights.
In India
- Kashmir — houseboats on Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam; snow in winter, meadows in spring and summer.
- Andaman Islands — Havelock and Neil for beaches, snorkelling and scuba from October to May.
- Kerala — Munnar's hills, an Alleppey houseboat night and a beach stay at Kovalam or Marari.
- Himachal Pradesh — Shimla, Manali and quieter valleys for mountain views and cosy stays.
- Udaipur and Rajasthan — lake palaces and heritage hotels, best from October to March.
- Goa — easy to reach, with options from lively beaches to quiet resorts in the south.
Planning tips
- Book two to three months ahead, especially for the wedding season and December.
- Mention that you're on your honeymoon when booking — many hotels add a cake, flowers or a room upgrade when available.
- Leave a rest day after the wedding before you fly, if you can.
- For trips abroad, check passports, visas and travel insurance early, and book tickets exactly as the name appears on each passport — a name change after the wedding can take time.
- Don't over-plan; a couple of free afternoons make the trip feel like a holiday.
