Palaces in Rajasthan, the white desert at Rann Utsav, Goa's beaches, Kerala's backwaters, the Andamans and short trips abroad — where to go this winter, and how early to book.
Winter is the best season for most of India and many short-haul trips abroad: clear skies, comfortable days and festive evenings. It is also the busiest season, with Diwali, Christmas, New Year and school holidays all falling in these months — so the earlier you decide, the better the hotels and fares you get. Here are seven ideas that work well from Mumbai.
- 1
Rajasthan — forts, palaces and desert camps
Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer are at their best between November and February. A week covers three cities comfortably; add a night in a desert camp near Jaisalmer for the dunes and a folk evening under the stars.
- 2
Rann Utsav, Kutch — the white desert
The Rann of Kutch turns into a vast white salt plain in winter, and the Rann Utsav tent city runs through the season with cultural shows and full-moon nights. Two or three nights is enough; combine it with Bhuj and the craft villages nearby.
- 3
Goa — beaches and a festive buzz
Short to reach and easy for every age group. North Goa is lively, South Goa calmer and better for families. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks, so early December or January gives better value.
- 4
Kerala — backwaters, hills and wildlife
Pleasant weather across the state, from cool Munnar mornings to a night on an Alleppey houseboat. Our six-day Kerala itinerary is a good starting point for first-timers.
- 5
Andaman Islands — clear water and quiet beaches
Havelock and Neil islands are made for snorkelling, scuba and slow beach days. Plan at least five nights, as ferry timings shape the itinerary.
- 6
Dubai — a short hop abroad
Winter is the most comfortable time for the desert safari, theme parks and outdoor sightseeing. Five nights suits a first visit; sort out passports and visas early.
- 7
Thailand, Singapore or Bali — easy international holidays
Popular first trips abroad with good flight options from Mumbai. Each suits a different style — Thailand for beaches and nightlife, Singapore for families and theme parks, Bali for resorts and culture.
How early should you book?
- Christmas, New Year and long weekends: book six to eight weeks ahead, or earlier for Goa, Rajasthan and the Andamans.
- Rann Utsav tents and houseboats have limited inventory and fill up fast on peak dates.
- International trips: allow time for passports, visas and travel insurance before you lock in flights.
- Travelling in a group or with grandparents? Ask about rooms close together and slower-paced itineraries.
Packing for winter trips
North India and the desert get cold at night, so carry warm layers even if the days are sunny. For Goa, Kerala, the Andamans and South-East Asia, light cottons, sunscreen and a hat are enough — with one light jacket for air-conditioned flights and early mornings.
